The Birmingham Figure Skating Club and Pelham Skate School will bring some extra holiday magic this year with the upcoming Christmas Show on Ice. This dazzling ice-skating spectacular has been a cherished family tradition in the City of Pelham for years. Santa himself is even taking a break from his busy schedule to host the festivities. He and a group of staff and volunteers will transform the main arena at the Pelham Civic Complex & Ice Arena into a holiday wonderland with breathtaking performances and festive music for a holiday experience you and your family won’t want to miss.
Skating Director Christian Newberry says this year’s program is set to be the most robust yet. “We have a jam-packed show this year. We’ve expanded the show to include more ice skaters of all ages and skill levels. You’ll see everyone from our Learn to Skate students to professional coaches,” he said. All routines are inspired by the spirit of the season. Audiences can expect to see a variety of performances, from elegant pairs skating to group routines set to songs like "Santa Claus is Coming to Town", "Run, Run Rudolph," "Little Drummer Boy," and other holiday favorites.
The popularity of the Learn to Skate programs at the Civic Complex & Ice Arena have added to this year’s lineup. “Our coaches are very dedicated and passionate about the sports of figure skating and hockey,” Newberry said. “The caliber of staff allows the program to offer a wide variety of classes for levels, including novice skaters, figure skating, hockey, and advanced instruction.”
The adult curriculum is designed for the beginner adult skater. It promotes physical fitness and improves balance and coordination while teaching proper skating techniques. Snowplow Sam is for children ages two-and-a-half to five and is designed to help the preschool-aged skater develop preliminary coordination and strength to maneuver on the ice. Courses for ages six and up teach fundamentals and give skaters a strong foundation on which to build their skills.
The coaching staff offers advanced level classes and teams for students whose skills have progressed and are ready for the next level. The U.S. Figure Skating Aspire program is the bridge between Learn to Skate group classes and U.S. Figure Skating membership.
The Christmas Show in Ice is the perfect way to showcase the incredible talent of skaters who call the rinks of the Pelham Civic Complex & Ice Arena home. Don’t miss this unforgettable celebration on ice that promises to be the perfect way to make holiday memories with loved ones. After the show, attendees will have an opportunity to skate with the performers, so dress warmly.
