The focus of this week's flood recovery update is on the requirements National Flood Insurance Program communities are expected to follow after a flood event. This includes damage assessments to determine whether a structure sustained substantial damage during an event and if so, the requirements that must be satisfied during the recovery as a result of that determination.
Many are asking, "Why now?" It's because all Alabama Floodplain Administrators received a memorandum from the State NFIP Coordinator on November 5, 2021, with very specific instructions that must be followed. If they are not, the city could lose its NFIP status, meaning no one in any of Pelham's floodplains could purchase anything close to reasonably priced insurance.
