The first Pelham Parks & Recreation 5K was held in 2018. The vision, then as now, was to create an event that would attract serious runners, recreational runners, and families. This flat and fast course takes runners along the beautiful Greenway Trail in the City Park along Cahaba Valley Creek. The Pelham Parks & Recreation 5K race route was certified by USA Track and Field in 2021.
The race route uses all available pavement in the City Park, included closed city streets, park entrances, and even the perimeter of a parking lot to reach the necessary distance. This course distinctive offers an advantage for participants and spectators: from one location, family and friends can see the runners start and finish the race, as well as at the one-mile and two-mile points of the course. Dozens of volunteers are stationed on the course to provide direction and cheers at key points.
The Pelham Parks & Recreation 5K is one of the few races in the area that offers prize money for the top three men and women, as well as age group awards, finisher medals, race t-shirts, and an affordable entry fee. Organizers are never short on ideas, and every year, detailed reviews and evaluations of the event lead to growth and developments for the next year.
